La aterosclerosis es responsable de aproximadamente el 80% de todas las muertes entre los pacientes diab\u00e9ticos. La exposici\u00f3n prolongada a la hiperglucemia es ahora reconocida como un factor importante en la patog\u00e9nesis de la aterosclerosis en la diabetes. La hiperglucemia induce un gran n\u00famero de alteraciones a nivel celular en el tejido vascular que potencialmente aceleran el proceso ateroscler\u00f3tico.
